Developing Leaders with Lived Experience To Fight Social, Racial, and Economic Inequity

For 49 years BOSS has fought to house people without homes, heal families impacted by violence and trauma, and lift up communities impacted by systemic racism and inequitable housing, employment, education, and criminal justice policies. Throughout the pandemic, BOSS staff have been committed to developing new solutions while continuing to serve our most distressed communities. One of the most exciting is the Social Justice Collective (SJC) Fellowship.

At a time when communities of color are fighting to have their voices heard, the SJC Fellowship is developing new leaders who have personal experience in the justice system — predominantly Black and Brown men and women. The Fellowship provides a 20-week series of trainings designed to educate, inspire, and train new leaders—it is making change in important ways:

Lifting Up
LIVED EXPERIENCE

The Fellowship trains new leaders through weekly classes on the history of social justice movements, and specific political education, cultural awareness, restorative justice principles and organizing tactics. Our Fellows share their personal stories with elected officials in Sacramento—represent impacted individuals in local reentry planning commissions—and encourage justice involved individuals to register to vote!

Creating
HEALTHY & SAFE COMMUNITIES

BOSS established comprehensive Neighborhood Impact Hubs, under our Reentry and Neighborhood Safety Programs banner, to bring needed resources and support to neighborhoods in East, West and Downtown Oakland hit hardest by decades of policy violence that produced generational poverty, resulting in nihilistic behaviors that established concentrated eras of violence and crime. Our Neighborhood Impact Hubs provide job training and employment, housing navigation, rental assistance and supports, as well as community outreach, peer support, violence interruption, mediation along with an array of survival needs for individuals and families.

Changing
SYSTEMIC RACISM & INEQUITY

BOSS is fighting to change the underlying causes of systemic racism, inequity, and racially biased policies by partnering with Californians for Safety and Justice and Los Angeles Regional Reentry Partnership to create a statewide association of reentry organizations who influence policy design and distribution of resources.
