On Friday August 7th, Hotel Shattuck Plaza hosted a small reception to present the inaugural check from their Shattuck for Shelter program. Funds from Shattuck for Shelter will help support BOSS’s street outreach services in downtown Berkeley as well as other emergency services such as showers, counseling, and shelter.
Hotel Shattuck Plaza approached BOSS several months ago wanting to get more involved in the community. The Shattuck for Shelter program has staff ask all hotel guests if they would like to contribute $1 per night during their stay to BOSS. The hotel has also contributed food, gift certificates, bedding, and volunteer time.
In the beautifully decorated red, black, and white surroundings of Five Restaurant*, a reception organized by the hotel’s Director of Marketing and Sales Trish Owens offered delicious food and drinks for guests that included hotel staff, BOSS employees, and numerous partners from the City of Berkeley, including City Council Member Linda Maio, Senior Aide to Mayor Tom Bates Sbeydeh Viveros, and others.
The hotel’s General Manager Greg Mauldin presented a check to Executive Director Donald Frazier for proceeds from the initial two months of the program plus a matching gift by the hotel.
Said Greg, “We wanted to do something special for this first check presentation, so we matched what was donated by hotel guests.”
He noted that while it was not a large sum, he knew that every bit helped and he hoped the program would continue to grow.
“We are very grateful for this partnership with Hotel Shattuck,” said Donald Frazier. “They are truly a leader in the community when it comes giving back.”
