The Reclaiming Our Communities (ROC) program is funded through the City of Oakland’s Measure Z-funded Oakland Unite project. The goal of ROC is to reduce violence and recidivism in high risk Oakland neighborhoods, specifically West Oakland (zone 1).
Reclaiming Our Communities (ROC) employs Violence Interrupters and Outreach Navigators who conduct outreach on the streets in places where targeted high risk individuals live and congregate, as well as at community and faith institutions in those communities. Staff connect with participants to assess their needs, give them information about local health and social service resources and make needed referrals, connect individuals with education and employment opportunities, and provide mentoring and other support. The project also reaches out to family members, to strengthen each individual’s positive social support network, including organizing periodic social/community activities.
