The Washington Inn for Oakland’s Most Vulnerable

Updated: Feb 6

For over FIVE decades, Building Opportunities for Self-Sufficiency (BOSS) has been a pillar of support for individuals and families navigating the challenges of homelessness, mental health struggles, and systemic inequities.

We proudly announce the opening of the Washington Inn, a 44-unit interim housing development in Oakland designed to serve those who need it most.

A Community in Crisis: The Need for Housing and Support

The statistics are staggering. In Alameda County alone, more than 9,700 people experience homelessness on any given night, with a significant portion facing severe mental health challenges. Studies show that individuals experiencing homelessness are twice as likely to have mental health disorders and are disproportionately impacted by systemic barriers to care and stability.

We hope that adding the Washington Inn to BOSS' housing networks is a lifeline and a space of refuge. Focusing on behavioral health and holistic support we're offering residents a chance to heal, rebuild, and transition to permanent housing.

At the Washington Inn, residents have access to:

  • Behavioral Health Services: Trauma-informed care and mental health support tailored to individual needs.

  • Case Management: Personalized plans to address barriers to self-sufficiency.

  • Community Building: A sense of belonging fostered through group activities and supportive environments.

This initiative reflects BOSS’s commitment to addressing the root causes of homelessness while honoring the dignity and potential of every individual we serve.

A Legacy of Transformation

Since 1971, BOSS has been at the forefront of empowering underserved communities, breaking down barriers, and providing pathways to stability. From emergency shelters to employment programs, we’ve remained steadfast in our mission to create opportunities for self-sufficiency.

The Washington Inn is another milestone in this legacy—a testament to what we can achieve when prioritizing compassion and action.

The Washington Inn is a promise to our community, a commitment to healing, and a reminder we can create lasting change. Housing initiatives like the Washington Inn are critical but require community support.
