A Night of Magic and Purpose
OAKLAND, CA - The First Unitarian Church in Oakland recently opened its doors to BOSS’s 2024 Rising Stars Celebration of Hope, a powerful annual celebration dedicated to honoring some of the individuals who have transformed their lives through resilience, determination, and the support of BOSS programs. The gathering was filled with community members, supporters, honorees, and donors, all united by a common cause: to celebrate 40 incredible individuals—BOSS’s Rising Stars—who have overcome formidable challenges such as homelessness, systemic injustice, and personal trauma. Each Rising Star stood as a testament to human strength and the unwavering support provided by BOSS.
This year’s theme centered around the importance of community as both a refuge and a catalyst for change. Under the compassionate guidance of MC Satia Frazier-North, the event embodied a spirit of unity and shared purpose. Reverend Harry Williams’s invocation served as a grounding reminder of the collective power of community, setting a reflective tone that resonated deeply throughout the evening.
Honoring 40 Remarkable Journeys
The evening’s true heart was found in honoring 40 remarkable individuals, each celebrated for their journey from hardship to self-sufficiency. These Rising Stars received glass-framed Certificates of Achievement, symbols of both their resilience and the transformative power of BOSS programs. From individuals finding stable housing to those securing employment and attaining education, each Rising Star’s story demonstrated the profound impact of tailored support and guidance.

One particularly moving moment was hearing from De’Zha Boynton, a former Rising Star alum, whose mother, Denise Moody, shared her journey from needing BOSS’s services to becoming a dedicated first-grade teacher. De’Zha’s story, like so many others, reflects the lasting change that comes from BOSS’s mission-driven services and unwavering commitment.
Celebrating Dan Scarola: A Legacy of Dedication and Service
At this year’s Rising Stars Celebration of Hope, BOSS honored Dan Scarola, who served on our Board of Directors for an impressive 23 years.
Dan’s steadfast commitment has been instrumental in helping BOSS shape its mission and expand its impact in Alameda County. His contributions went far beyond typical board service—Dan’s guidance and passion for community played a pivotal role in developing programs that address housing insecurity, justice reform, and supportive services for the most vulnerable populations. We are profoundly grateful for his enduring dedication to building a more just and compassionate community.
Inspiration, Advocacy, and The Importance of VOTING
CEO Donald Frazier’s opening remarks underscored BOSS’s mission of helping individuals find stability, opportunity, and purpose through housing, health, employment, and support services. Attorney General Rob Bonta sent an inspiring message, and keynote speaker Dajuan Stewart Sr. delivered an address that resonated with hope and resilience, encouraging each Rising Star to continue on their path to self-sufficiency and urging attendees to support this vital work.
With Sister Mattie Johnson's soul-stirring rendition of Lift Every Voice and Sing and profound reflections from community leaders, the event highlighted the honorees' achievements and the role we must play in making those achievements possible. Like the anthem’s message, these Rising Stars embody the strength to "lift their voices" and press forward with courage, grace, and resilience.
Many speakers underscored the vital importance of exercising our right to VOTE and to make our voices heard on key issues. With multiple propositions and measures on the ballot right now that will directly affect the people BOSS serves -- measures that will impact housing (Propositions 5 and 33), criminal justice reform (Propositions 36 and 6), and local resources (Oakland Measure NN) -- speakers encouraged everyone to do their research and to get out and VOTE!
Supporting the Next Generation of Rising Stars
As the evening drew to a close, BOSS reminded attendees of the vital role they play in sustaining these life-changing programs -- work made possible through the generosity of donors, sponsors, and volunteers who believe in the mission of BOSS. BOSS called upon the community to provide support in whatever way they can—be it through a donation, volunteer work, or spreading awareness.
For those who may only give once this year, BOSS encourages making it count by supporting the Rising Stars program. Each donation helps fund crucial services that provide more than just resources; they offer hope, opportunity, and a sense of belonging.
Make a Difference—Vote and Donate!
As election season approaches, the significance of voting has never been clearer. The decisions made at the polls directly impact the lives of those served by BOSS, influencing policies on housing, employment, public safety, and healthcare. BOSS urges everyone in our community to make their voices heard and to support candidates and initiatives that prioritize equity, affordable housing, job opportunities, and community safety.
Your contribution can be the stepping stone that turns hardship into hope. By supporting BOSS, you’re investing in the resilience and future of our community. Visit self-sufficiency.org/donate and be a part of the transformative journey of even more Rising Stars in the year ahead!
