We are thrilled to introduce Derrick Bell as the Resident Artist for this year's Black August Block Party!
Derrick, a Cincinnati native and Oakland-based Fine Artist, Educator, Entrepreneur, and Philanthropist, brings over three decades of experience and passion to the world of art.
With a BA in Studio Art from Morehouse College and an MA in Art Education from Mount St. Joseph University, Derrick’s work transcends ethnic, national, and generational barriers, evoking deep emotions and spirituality. His vibrant, colorful creations blend Realism, Cubism, Abstract Expressionism, and Afrocentric iconography, forging a unique and distinctive style that resonates deeply with audiences.
Derrick’s art is more than just visual—it is a call to action. His works, such as The Cursed Crown We Detest, The Dance, and Bloodline, explore complex themes like human rights, self-acceptance, and social justice, encouraging viewers to question their perspectives and engage in purposeful reflection.
Revolutionary Art Is A Powerful Tool In The Arc of Liberation
BOSS focuses on developing solutions to mass homelessness, mass incarceration, and public safety, and creating social justice programs tailored to meet our people's needs through a healing justice lens. We are on the front lines, providing immediate survival needs for our people marginalized by addiction, trauma, criminality, incarceration, poverty, racism, sexism, homelessness, and all forms of violence.
In 2021, at the inaugural Black August Block Party, we unveiled a mural titled The Arc of Liberation, a mural that depicts our offering to our community to inform, engage, and reflect.
At the 4th Annual Black August Block Party, Derrick Bell’s presence is not just about showcasing art—it’s about inspiring change, fostering dialogue, and connecting with the community on a profound level. His mission to impact the world through creative expression aligns perfectly with the spirit of Black August, making him an ideal choice to help lead this year’s artistic and cultural celebration.
On August 31st, the Black August Block Party will transform Frank H. Ogawa Plaza into a vibrant space where art meets activism. Come witness live performances from local artists who channel the spirit of resistance through their work, and explore the Artists' Corner, where creativity and political consciousness intersect.
Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to engage, create, and connect with the community. Bring your families, friends, and creative spirits to the Artist Zone – an experience that promises fun, growth, and the joy of artistic expression! And, of course, to celebrate Derrick Bell's remarkable works.
