As we recognize Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week November 17th- 23rd, we’re reminded of the urgent need to support the most vulnerable members of our community. Hunger and homelessness often go hand-in-hand, and both have severe, lasting impacts on individuals and families. BOSS remains committed to fighting these crises through emergency shelters, housing security, and services that offer more than a temporary solution—they provide a pathway to stability.
BOSS Emergency Shelter Network
BOSS's Emergency Shelter Network plays a vital role in assisting those facing immediate housing crises. Our emergency shelters are designed to provide more than just a roof—they offer a compassionate, secure environment where individuals can begin to address the barriers to stable housing. Each shelter is equipped with resources for job training, mental health support, and community connections, ensuring that residents have the support needed to transition toward self-sufficiency.
Homelessness is not only about housing but about maintaining a stable life. At BOSS, our Housing Security Program extends beyond temporary solutions, aiming to help individuals stay housed for the long term. We work with residents to address the root causes of homelessness—whether they stem from job loss, health issues, or other challenges—and connect them with the resources needed to build a more sustainable future.
Our services include:
• Case Management: Trained staff work with residents
one-on-one to create individualized plans for overcoming personal challenges and accessing community resources.
• Workforce Development: Through partnerships and in-house programs, we help individuals gain job skills and prepare for employment, empowering them to secure a steady income and long-term stability.
• Mental Health Support: We recognize the impact of trauma on housing stability and connect residents to mental health resources and counseling, offering a foundation for recovery and resilience.
BOSS’s Ongoing Impact on Homelessness in Oakland
In California, homelessness remains a growing challenge, with Oakland experiencing an exceptionally high need for shelter and supportive services. This past year alone, BOSS has helped hundreds of individuals and families find safe shelter to prevent future housing instability—successfully assisting residents in securing permanent housing, gaining employment, and achieving financial stability.
This Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, we invite you to take action:
• Donate: Your contributions help us maintain and expand our emergency shelters and housing programs. Even a small donation makes a significant impact.
• Volunteer: By volunteering with BOSS, you can provide essential support, from helping with meals to assisting in workforce development programs.
• Advocate: Spread awareness about homelessness and the steps we can all take to support housing stability and hunger relief.
BOSS is proud to sponsor Humble Giving, located at our Wellness Empowerment Resiliency Campus.
This collaborative event is hosted in partnership with the Mixed Behavior Foundation. Humble Giving brings the community together to provide essentials to those experiencing hunger and homelessness, creating an opportunity for people to connect, give back, and make a meaningful impact.
The Humble Giving will provide hot meals, pillows, blankets, hygiene kits, and other essential supplies to individuals and families in need. Volunteers will serve meals and distribute items and offer guidance on available resources for housing support, job training, and mental health services.
BOSS believes that everyone deserves a safe, stable place to call home.
