Our Organization 

The mission of BOSS is to help homeless, poor, and disabled people achieve health and self-sufficiency, and to fight against the root causes of poverty and homelessness. The organization was founded in 1971 by a group of volunteers from the Hillel Streetwork Project in Berkeley who responded to the needs of mentally ill individuals being released to the streets by state hospital closures. Today BOSS is an award-winning organization that helps people who are facing deep poverty and multiple special needs. BOSS works one-on-one with each family and each individual to help them achieve stable income, permanent affordable housing, and lasting wellness.


Reporting to the Director of Finance and Administration, the Accounting Manager is responsible for all areas relating to financial reporting. This position will be responsible for developing and maintaining accounting principles, practices and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements. The Accounting Manager supervises two staff accountants and is responsible for managing the team to ensure that work is properly allocated and completed in a timely and accurate manner. This position addresses tight deadlines and a multitude of accounting activities including general ledger preparation, financial reporting, year-end audit preparation and the support of budget and forecast activities. The Accounting Manager will have contact with the Executive Director which requires strong interpersonal communication skills both written and verbal


  • Obtain and maintain a thorough understanding of the financial reporting and general ledger structure.
  • Ensure an accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and year end close.
  • Ensure the timely reporting of all monthly financial information.
  • Ensure the accurate and timely processing of positive pay transactions.
  • Ensure the monthly and quarterly Bank Compliance activities are performed in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Supports budget and forecasting activities.
  • Supports overall department goals and objectives.
  • Monitors and analyzes department work to develop more efficient procedures and use of resources while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
  • Advises staff regarding the handling of non-routine reporting transactions.
  • Responds to inquiries from the Executive Director regarding financial results, special reporting requests and the like.
  • Ensure a clean and timely year-end audit.
  • Ensure all financial reporting deadlines are met.
  • Assist in development and implementation of new procedures and features to enhance the workflow of the department.
  • Provide training to new and existing staff as needed.
  • Handle personnel issues relating to staff conflicts, absenteeism, performance issues, etc.
  • Special projects and workflow process improvements.


BA/BS in Business with an emphasis in Accounting, CPA required

Technical Skills and Prior Experience

  • Five to seven years prior supervisory experience in the financial reporting/general ledger area.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, supervisory and customer service skills required.
  • Firm foundation in accounting principles and financial reporting standards, including GAAP
  • Detail-oriented with great organizational skills, but also comfortable with ambiguity.
  • Ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks and meet all deadlines
  • Account reconciliation experience required.
  • Excellence in timelines, accuracy and consistency of data entry and customer service.
  • Non-profit experience preferred and/or interest in working in the non-profit field
  • Candidate must have strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite and must possess a comprehensive understanding of Excel with the ability to create and manipulate spreadsheets.
  • Proficient in Accounting Software, preferably Blackbaud Financial Edge..
  • Able to work effectively in either a team and/or self-motivated to complete projects successfully.
