BOSS was recently approached by Zip Code East Bay, a local organization that was putting on their 2nd Annual Colusa Circle 5K Walk/Run. They were looking for a charity to donate the proceeds to, and selected BOSS!
We are so grateful to Zip Code East Bay, all the race volunteers and supporters, and everyone who came out to run or walk for health, community, fun, and helping those in need – the 5k event raised 5K to support BOSS housing and service programs for low income East Bay families and individuals!
Special shout-out to Lisa Chase at Zip Code East Bay for coordinating with BOSS to help get the word out about the event – and please stay tuned and join them for next year’s 5k!
Following is the Zip Code East Bay press release following the March 16th 5K event.
“KENSINGTON, CA — Zip Code East Bay, an east bay real estate practice, held its second annual Colusa Circle 5k on March 16, 2019. This grassroots charity race benefited Berkeley’s BOSS “Building Opportunities for Self Sufficiency”. BOSS is a non-profit that works to help homeless, poor, and disabled people with housing, health, income, justice and self-sufficiency.
Despite the threat of spring rain, race day was bright and sunny. Over 150 participants began the morning with a pre-race warm up led by Fuse Fitness then ran, walked or strolled the 3.1 mile race. The Berkeley High Jazz Band welcomed runners back as they crossed the finish line. Racers then enjoyed post race coffee donated by The Arlington, pastries donated by Semifreddi’s and fire truck tours by the Kensington Fire Department. The event concluded with a raffle including prizes donated by Lift + Sprint, Berkeley Running Company, the Kensington Farmer’s Market, Semifreddi’s, Fuse Fitness and Road Runners Sports.
The race raised over $5,000 from registrations and donations and all proceeds from the race go directly to BOSS. In addition to the race proceeds, Zip Code East Bay collected over 25 pairs of used running shoes and 60 pairs of new socks for BOSS.
As a certified B corp, Zip Code East Bay was also committed to making this event as green as possible. All planning aspects of the race were made with the planet in mind. Racers were encouraged to walk or bike to the event, compostable supplies and materials were used whenever possible, racer goodie bags were eliminated to reduce waste and a water bottle valet station was created to encourage racers to avoid water cups. Less than a ¼ of a bag of garbage was produced from the entire event!”
