Hayward, CA – Despite a one week postponement due to rain, a group of high energy, hard working, good spirited volunteers from the co-ed service fraternity at Cal State East Bay, Alpha Phi Omega – Omicron Zeta Chapter, came out to BOSS’s Hayward emergency shelter on Saturday March 10th, and helped us begin Spring planting!
Led by Paulyn and Sam, co-Vice Presidents of the Omicron Zeta Chapter, the students rolled up their jeans, pulled back their hair, and dug in for a productive afternoon of pulling weeds and planting fruits, vegetables, and herbs for the shelter, including:
- Green beans
Said a representative from Alpha Phi Omega, Omicron Zeta chapter, “Volunteering together with BOSS at the Hayward Shelter was one of the most fulfilling service projects that we have participated in. The feeling of appreciation and giving back was a feeling like no other.”
The gardening plot in the backyard at BOSS’s South County Homeless Project (SCHP) is tremendously important to the program – it provides food that is used by shelter cooks, as well as the opportunity for therapeutic gardening activity for the homeless mentally ill individuals who are staying at the shelter while seeking permanent housing.
“Things went really well,” said John Darby, SCHP Program Manager. “The students are looking forward to returning and working in the flower beds!”
According to one of the students, “The garden started off as a little lot with a whole boat-load of weeds. By the time we left, we had worked the soil, cleared the planters, and planted a variety of herbs and vegetables. Thank you so much for having us!”
A huge special thank you also goes out to Kerry Tuma and Tina Lambert of the Hayward Chamber of Commerce – Although Kerry was unable to join us as originally planned due to the rain postponement, he sponsored an email blast that Tina sent out to the entire Chamber membership when we were looking for volunteers. Thank you so much for your support!!!
And thank you to the wonderful young women and men of Alpha Phi Omega – Omicron Zeta Chapter, for your tremendous work and community spirit!! We are proud to have you as friends and neighbors, and know the community is in great hands with you as our future leaders!
