Haircuts With Heart at BOSS!

Being homeless comes with a slew of challenges – some obvious (finding housing, income, access to health care), and some less obvious, like having someplace to safely store medications if you’re not in a shelter to obtaining the required materials for a child’s school project to getting your hair cut. Fortunately there are amazing groups and individuals who are trying to fill all of these needs, including the latest one introduced to us – Haircuts with Heart!

Haircuts with Heart is a new nonprofit in Oakland that offers free hair cut services, care and respect to our community members who may not be able to pay for these services. Haircut for Heart believes that a haircut is a simple gesture that can help restore dignity and a sense of identity.

The organization is made up of “professional hairstylists, barbers, makeup artists, nail technicians and salon owners that work with all textures of hair and who represent the community and desire to give back,” says Rebecca Beardsley, Executive Director.

Haircuts with Heart have provided their services to many organizations since its inception – St. Mary’s, Operation Dignity, Women’s Daytime Drop-in Center, Alameda Boys & Girls Club, and many others – and now they have offered to help BOSS participants!

On May 22nd, Haircuts with Heart offered up to 40 haircuts to residents of BOSS’s Rosa Parks and Casa Maria housing programs. These programs serve homeless adults with disabilities and transition age youth (18-24) who are trying to achieve healthy independent living. Rosa Parks was recently converted from transitional to permanent housing, and while it awaits final approval for re-opening, it is currently providing temporary housing to some of the families and individuals displaced by the recent West Oakland fire.

Residents needed to sign up in advance of the event. Haircuts with Heart set up their equipment at Casa Maria and gave a grateful group of men and women a special treat – a free personalized haircut! (Plus makeup consultation, for those who are interested!) You can see pictures from the event on our Flickr and Facebook pages!

Thank you to all the amazing volunteers at Haircuts with Heart – your generosity and kindness brought joy to men and women in need in our community!
