Summer is marked by beautiful weather, carefree days, and long bike-rides. On June 21st in Downtown Oakland, the first day of summer, 28 BOSS CTEC participants received the gift of self-sufficiency from a local nonprofit, Cycles of Change.
Cycles of Change is an Up-cycle Commuter Bike Program out of Oakland committed to a greener Oakland through green commuting. The Mission Statement for Cycles of Change, as listed on their website sites that they want to create “healthier East Bay communities by helping youth and adults gain tools for more environmentally and economically sustainable living.” They are also committed to “Social Justice and Economic Equality … through fulfilling, valued employment.”
Not only were the participants given new or gently used bicycles, but they also received a 4-hour Safety and Awareness Training, theft prevention tips, a personal bike fitting, a helmet, bike lock, and safety light! After all this, a joyful group donned their new gear and went on a group ride.
These bikes will certainly bring years of joy and healthy activity. And while that alone is deeply important to our community, to these participants, these bicycles are so much more. They will also enable our participants to be self-sufficient. They can now easily, and inexpensively commute around the Oakland and Berkeley area for social engagements but also for getting to and from work.
BOSS is so thrilled that Cycles of Change has partnered with us to the benefit of our CTEC participants, are so grateful to them and their donors for all they are doing for our community. They are truly Turning Lives Around!!
