Hotel Shattuck Volunteers Strike Again!

BOSS has the very best corporate partners. Case in point: Hotel Shattuck Plaza & FIVE Restaurant.

We entered a partnership with the Hotel Shattuck Plaza last summer and it has been a great success. They have donated meeting space to us, support our programs with in-hotel fundraising, and have donated both a Silent Auction item and food to the upcoming Rising Stars event on June 4th! But one of the greatest contributions to our community has been the dedication and volunteering of their staff.

FullSizeRender_1Earlier this year, 13 hotel employees volunteered to weed and do light maintenance at the Ursula Sherman Village, which shelters families and single adults. An afternoon of many hands made light work of the gardening needed to keep The Village grounds clean and beautiful. On May 28th Hotel Shattuck Plaza & FIVE Restaurant had 9 staff members, many of the same individuals who showed up for The Village in April, volunteer to do the same work in the MASC courtyard.

The MASC provides drop-in services for chronically homeless people seven days a week in downtown Berkeley. Its backyard courtyard is a hard-used little patch of land. It has a community garden cared for by staff as well as individuals receiving services from one of the handful of organizations located in the Veterans building. It’s a gathering place, a place where individuals talk, rest, and share experiences, and it’s a safe place where individuals enrolled in case management keep their belongings in lockers. It’s a busy place that can be littered and unkempt; But no longer!

The Shattuck volunteers who showed up spent just over an hour picking up trash and pulling weeds making this tiny square more welcoming to all. We cannot thank them enough for their tireless assistance: our work is only possible with the support of our caring community!

Hotel Shattuck is a beautifully restored historic hotel that offers the boutique experience in the heart of Berkeley. FIVE Restaurant has been listed in the Michelin Dining guide every year since 2010, recognized by Drunken Tomato as having the best Bloody Mary in and around San Francisco, and was recently awarded Diners’ Choice Winner by Open Table! We are lucky to have such a powerhouse on our team!

Volunteer opportunities are always available for individuals, groups, and companies. Please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Jeannie Swafford at jswafford@self-sufficiency.org for more information.
